You may be one of millions of people dealing with allergies. You may suffer from allergies on rare occasions, and then find yourself being dragged down by them often at other times. If you have allergies, help is out there! You can find help for your annoying symptoms.
For safety’s sake, remember to use over-the-counter antihistamine when you are at home. Some of these drugs can make you sleepy and impair your reflexes. Even when there is no severe warning listed on the label, take the initial dose whey you are in the comfort of your own home and do not need to operate a vehicle or anything else potentially hazardous if you become drowsy.
During the periods of really nice weather, you may be inclined to crack open the windows at home in order to save some money on expensive air conditioning costs. But, doing so could exacerbate your allergies. For the best results, make sure your air conditioning unit is equipped with a special HEPA filter, to cut down the number of allergens inside your home. It may not feel as fresh, but you will certainly breathe more easily.
If you can, do not have carpet or rugs in your house. Carpet is not easy to clean and impossible to clean completely. The fibers of the carpet hold onto dust, pollen, mites, dander, and other allergens. If you or someone in your family has allergies, you will be better served by flooring that is easy to clean; tile, wood and linoleum are ideal.
Shower and wash hair before going to sleep. During the daytime, your skin and hair may become covered with dust, pollen or spores, which makes you more likely to experience allergic symptoms during the night. Simply hop in the shower to cleanse the day away, and avoid nighttime allergy symptoms.
There is no way that you can avoid dust mites. As you might expect from their name, you can find them burrowed deep in your pillows or mattress as they feast on skin cells that have been shed. Disgusting! In order to manage this problem, use zippered pillow cases and mattress covers. Wash your bed linens in hot water once per week to kill dust mites, too.
Children are often more susceptible to allergies at specific times in their maturation process. For instance, babies experience proteins first through the food they eat, and that explains how many food allergies some babies can have. When babies get older, they are around other protein allergens, which could later turn into a pollen allergy. If you have a child who shows signs of being allergic to spores or pollen, pay close attention to this and because they could be allergic to many non-food allergies too.
While allergy tests are a good way to determine which allergens will affect you, these tests cannot determine how much those allergens will affect you. For instance, the skin test may reveal that you are sensitive to a spore that is common in your region. However, that spore may only result in a mild reaction or you might not have a reaction at all.
There are numerous prescription and over-the-counter drugs to treat allergies, but they don’t all work for everyone. If you explain your situation to your doctor, he or she may allow you to try out different drugs and treatments to see what works for you. If one product doesn’t work, that doesn’t mean that none of them will.
Try and make sure you cure your allergic reactions rather than avoid becoming allergic. For instance, allergy sufferers that typically experience dry or itchy eyes should keep their eye drops handy during allergy season. Someone with a scratchy throat might want to have lozenges at the ready.
Select antiperspirants with care. Especially when dealing with those aerosol sprays, the different chemicals and substances within the deodorant products can easily inflame sinuses, cause irritation to the eyes and throat and skin, etc. Ingredients like this can be harmful to you and your skin.
Don’t forget your medication when you go on vacation. The pollen and plants of a strange and different place may easily cause you to experience allergy symptoms. If you have ever had a severe allergic reaction, you may need to bring an Epi-pen along, as well. Epi-pens contain a potent dose of epinephrine which can stop an allergy attack.
Keep rugs and carpets to a minimum when you are decorating your residence. These tend to attract pollen and dust. If you have to have rugs in your home, make sure that you buy washable rugs and remember to wash them every couple of weeks to remove allergens.
If your young child is suffering from allergies, then he or she should have some medication handy in case a severe reaction were to occur. You may need to secure a physician’s note to provide to school officials. The school should also have this medication on-hand in case of an emergency. It can also help to provide the school with a possible allergen list; your child might also keep one with him in his backpack too.
It is surely possible to deal with your allergies as you enjoy life. Itchy eyes and a runny nose don’t need to diminish everything you do. Taking steps to relieve your allergic symptoms can do wonders in your life.
